This wooden fish has been made in Segou, Mali, by the Bozo people, an ethnic group living on the banks of the Niger River. Hand-carved from a single piece of wood and painted in Kaolin colours, the Bozo people use them as puppets in water rituals and various social events.

A people from the Kingdom of Ghana who settled in Mali around the 10th century, the Bozo dedicated themselves almost exclusively to fishing and trade. Their culture and art focus on their interaction with the Niger River.
