An unconventional chair design inspired by barley twists that features non-Euclidean geometry. Handcrafted by the artists in their east London studio, their pieces require tremendous woodworking skill and bring together handwoven cane and locally sourced timber. The result is an intricate design that’s beautiful and tactile.
Description
London based design duo Wilkinson Rivera have created an innovative method of constructing a chair. A stock cut of London plane wood (a hybrid of the American sycamore and Oriental plane trees) is cut crossways twice, and then refitted back together to form a single sculptural piece of wood. This element is then used in the construction of the chair in both the legs and back, creating a unique and beautiful finished piece. The method ensures that both strength is retained in the wood sections and that there is very little waste in the construction of the design.
