Product Information
Description
Charles & Ray Eames first coined the idea for a moulded shell chair with interchangeable bases in 1948, in response to the 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design'.

Although their first prototype was in costly metal, they quickly identified glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin as an ideal, cheaper, alternative. Until then, fibreglass had been primarily used within military applications, but the designers recognised its suitability for the furniture industry. With this material, they could create moulded, strong and lightweight seat shells for mass-production, and the Fiberglass Chair was born.

The collection of armchairs and side chairs share the original colour palette of warm organic tones developed by the Eameses’, plus a series of sturdy bases that give each chair its own distinct character.
